About Island Stone NZ
Our story originates on the beautiful and remote beaches of Indonesia. Learn about what inspired a diverse group of Westerners living in Bali to come together to create a natural stone tile company.
It all started in the 1990s with a diverse group of Westerners – Australians, New Zealanders, Europeans and Americans – who lived in Bali and loved everything it had to offer – the culture, the art, the people, the food, and the surf! Much time spent on beautiful Balinese beaches and a healthy dose of ingenuity led to an idea to combine some of the islands’ abundant natural resources with the highly skilled Indonesian handcraft industry. The result was the world’s first mesh-backed, interlocking pebble tile, introduced with great success into Australia, then the US market in 1998.
Fast forward more than 20 years and Island Stone’s portfolio of tiles and claddings has grown considerably. Our core philosophy remains the same – to take our cue off Mother Nature and turn this into unique and innovative products that provide designers, architects and customers with new ways to bring a sense of nature to residential and commercial spaces.
The other constant is our control of the entire process – from the first seed of an idea through to product design and testing, sourcing of the raw material, production and distribution solely through licensed Island Stone agents. We leave no stone unturned (pun intended!) when it comes to responsibly managing every step of the process to ensure only quality products carry the Island Stone brand. That’s not to say that we get it right 100% of the time. But if things aren’t as they should be, there’s no ducking for cover – the people putting it right are all part of the same team.
Island Stone NZ Ltd is locally owned and operated from our Showroom and Warehouse in Tauranga in the sunny Bay of Plenty. Husband and wife team Peter and Michelle Flint bought Island Stone NZ from one of the kiwi founders of the original business in 2005.
Like the international company, Island Stone NZ has grown and changed a lot since those early days. Our team of nearly 20 boasts a considerable amount of knowledge and experience in tiles and claddings, especially when it comes to natural stone. And there’s a lot to know! Each type of stone has its own unique structure and characteristics, these can influence where and how the stone can be used, how to install it and how to care for it. We’re only a phone call or an email away from being able to answer your question or provide some advice, and if the person answering the phone can’t help you straight away, they’ll find someone who can.
Also like our parent company, Island Stone New Zealand is committed to bringing our customers new ways of having a slice of nature wherever they live, work or play. For us that includes continuing to develop our range of New Zealand stone claddings. There’s just something about knowing that the stone originated from deep within the ground in our special corner of the earth.
